Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, such as those provided by Epic, Cerner and McKesson, manage the structured data associated with patients. This structured data includes allergies, medications, lab results, and progress notes for example. However, EMRs often do not address paper records and other unstructured data (such as x-rays, DICOM images, and EKG strips); documents that clinicians rely upon. This unstructured data should be made available to clinicians through the EMR. A comprehensive medical record consists of both the structured and unstructured data.
